Dallas FBI field agent
James P. Hosty who had been assigned to the Oswald
case, visits the Paine household On 1 November 1963, in a search for Lee. He
inquired about the whereabouts of Lee from Ruth Paine, who told him she did not
know, Hosty would leave his name and phone number with Mrs.Paine, and asked her
to call him if she learned where Oswald was living in Dallas.
Hosty made another visit to the Paine house on 5 November, but again Oswald was not there.
Reportedly no FBI agent ever spoke to Oswald from 10 August 1963 until after the assassination.
After the assassination Hosty�s name, address, telephone number and car license plate number was found in Oswald�s address book. Which lead to speculation of a direct contact between Oswald and Hosty. But this information was deleted from the report given to the Warren Commission.
After the Warren Commission was advised of the omission. Hosty indicated that he could think of no good reason for withholding the references. And that the information was well-known at the Dallas Police Department. And he speculated that while he was talking to Ruth Paine, Marine had went outside and copied his license plate number.
However another incident involving Hosty that was never reviled to the Warren Commission was even more troublesome.
Weeks before the assassination Oswald allegedly delivered a note addressed to Hosty at the FBI office in Dallas. Hosty has said that he was ordered to destroy the note by J. Gordon Shanklin, the special-agent-in-charge of the Dallas FBI office, Several hours after Oswald was murdered by Jack Ruby.
Hosty has stated that he never made a direct connection between Oswald and the note until after the assassination.
Although we will never really know what it said, Hosty has stated that it was of a complaining and threatening nature and said: something about them bothering his wife.
Hosty would take a lot of heat after the assassination and this is probably why he has been somewhat outspoken about his part in the assassination investigation.
Hosty has also stated that he never informed the Secret Service about Oswald, because Oswald never made any direct threats against the President.
There were other troubling reports about Oswald and the FBI.
In 1964, a Dallas FBI field agent Will Hayden Griffin allegedly stated that Oswald was definitely an FBI informant, and that FBI files in Washington would prove that fact.
