In the weeks Preceding the assassination, several witnesses would describe a man resembling Oswald shooting a rifle in and around Dallas. Most of these witnesses reported seeing this man at the Sports Drome Rifle Range in Dallas.

( 1. ) Malcolm H. Price, Jr.:

On one occasion Price adjusted the (subjects) rifle scope, this was on 28 September, but at that time Lee Oswald was reported to be in Mexico. Price also said that the (subject) told him that his scope was Japanese and that he had it mounted in a gun shop in Cedar Hills. But apparently there was no such shop in that area.

Price would describe the (subject) which he encountered on several occasions as Wearing a "Bulldogger Texas style" hat and having bubble gum or chewing tobacco in his cheek.

Price also reported that the (subject) drove an old car, possibly a 1940-1941 Ford. But Oswald reportedly did not drive.

( 2. ) Garland G. Slack:

reported having an altercation with the (subject), because he was shooting at Slack�s target. Slack also reported seeing the (subject) at the rifle range on 10 November. But Oswald was also reported to be at the Paine�s home in Irving on that date, and did not leave there. Slack would also describe the (subject) as having blond hair.

( 3. ) Dr. Homer Wood and his son Sterling C. Wood, also spoke with the (subject) about his rifle.

All of the above persons , expressed confidence that the man they saw was Oswald.

And two other persons reported seeing a person resembling Oswald at another range near Irving, firing a similar rifle just 2 days before the assassination.

Others at the Sports Drome recalled seeing the same individual but noting a similarity to Oswald, did not believe that the man was Oswald.

The witnesses agreed that the man they observed was firing a Mauser-type bolt-action rifle. And the person believed to be Oswald retained his shell casings presumably for reuse.

It�s interesting to note that the rifle found on the sixth floor of School Book Depository just after the assassination by Deputy Sheriff Eugene Boone , was described by Boone as a 7.65 Mauser. And an investigator Seymour Weitzman who was with Deputy Boone when the rifle was discovered. Also believed the rifle to be a 7.65 Mauser. After that day Deputy Boone was never able to positively identify the rifle as the one he had found.

The HSCA had all of the photographs of the rifle including the backyard photos looked at by photographs experts and they concluded that they all depicted the same rifle.
